Rose bud vs Frost King

This image captures a close-up view of a rose bud that has not yet bloomed. The petal shows signs of wear and aging, suggesting it is old or in the process of withering. This macro shot highlights the delicate texture and color of the bud amidst some natural greenery.

Betty sets buds well after the first light freeze of winter. Two dozen, to be exact. But an early super freeze (in the teens Fahrenheit) caught her unaware. They’re pretty in an un-pretty sort of way. Not to worry though. This happens every year. She’ll be back in the spring. PP

The 2024 Mustang Rally in Sturgis

A red Ford Mustang at a car show, with its hood open displaying its tuned engine.

Happens every year in Sturgis, SD after the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This year, more Mustangs than you could possibly hope to see in a day. Trying to photograph a reasonable selection of gorgeous cars from among the throng was frustratingly impossible. There’s a small gallery of images from the event posted at https://photophart.com or […]

Betty Boop in 2024

A close-up of a vibrant red rose with water droplets on its petals, showcasing the flower's intricate details and captivating beauty.

The Betty Boop rose is off to a good start in 2024. My unabashedly favorite flower subject is also the easiest one to get to. It’s in my backyard. The Betty Boop adds blossoms almost continuously all summer and well into fall. It will even add blossoms after the first and second snow storms of […]

The Mustang Rally in Sturgis 2022

A yellow and white Mustang with the hood open is parked on a street next to other cars.

Took me forever to get a new image album online at photophart.com Hardware problems and the nuts and bolts of daily living sucked up all the free time I was allotted. Anyhow, go to: https://photophart.com/gallery/sturgis-mustang-rally-2022/ Meager album of photos from the Sturgis Mustang Rally 2022. I started out having a lot more photos to display […]

This image captures a close-up view of a vivid pink rose, showcasing its intricate petals and delicate details. The focus and depth of field highlight the flower's natural beauty, making it an appealing subject for photography enthusiasts.

Behold The Betty Boop Rose   Prolific. Beautiful. Resilient. Tough to the point of belligerent defiance. Like most roses, she carries weapons and knows how to use them. She resides in a corner of my back yard. She bears a remarkable resemblance to the Wild Meadow Rose that grows in and around the northern Black […]

The Power Of The Print

Somewhere I read that information is being amassed and recorded at a rate so prodigious that no single human could read even a single day’s record in his/her entire lifetime. This assertion seems reasonable to me. So what of the historian of the future? Humans, if they still exist, many hundreds of years from now […]

Rattlesnake! Not again.

Prairie Rattlesnake

Having just added a post about the scarcity of rattlesnakes and encounters with them, I find I must amend that post. Yesterday, on a trek up the side of a hill I’ve been up hundreds of times, I happened upon two Prairie Rattlesnakes within 40 feet of one another. This particular hillside and I have […]

Wildflowers in the Black Hills

After a seemingly endless winter with record snow falls a weekly occurrence, we slogged through a June of near record rain accumulation. The wildflowers of the northern Black Hills responded with an equal ferocity. First to appear in early June was a perfusion of purple blooms. Penstemon, a trumpet shaped beauty, covered the lower hillsides. […]

Luminosity masking revisited

So you wanna see luminosity masking in operation, huh? Here’s a link to a roll-over image of mine demonstrating before and after masking, roll your mouse on to and off the image:  “Waterfall Luminosity Masking Demo “ The second image has been cropped slightly so it jumps a bit on the rollover. This is an […]
